[Boatanchors] Elmac AF-67 - Is V2 only for NFM?

I'm studying the schematic of the Elmac AF-67.

Is the only purpose of V2 inside the VFO box for NFM?

If so may it, and the associated circuitry, be removed
without harm to the VFO?

That reduces heat in the vfo enclosure.

Or am I misreading the schematic?
