SB400 or 401 might fit the bill, if no internal AM required.  Or, even
smaller, Kenwood T599, that has AM and even FM in it.

dual finals.

It needs to be compact, not a big ole hernia-maker as
I don't have a lot of spare op desk space.

QRP is fine.  At least 80, 40, 20m.

AM w/modulator w/push-pull output transformer would make
the intended mod easier - scroll down for BC-696 mod

CW is OK - just must have push-pull output amenable to
the same sort of mod. as shown in the BC-696.

Homebrew would be OK.
