[cisco-nas] using AS5300/MICA to send out faxes?

Hi,

I'm currently evaluating use of our existing AS5300 to send out faxes
from one of our fax servers.

Nothing sophisticated like T.37, T.38, ... - just "open TCP/IP connection
to AS5300, talk AT commands to modem, send fax that way".

The AS5300 stubbornly refuses cooperation - that is, it will talk to
me, accept AT+FCLASS=2 or +FCLASS=2.0 commands, and dial out, but
a few seconds after the remote modem picks up and you can hear fax/modem
noises, it will hang up, and signal "NO CARRIER". (FAR too quickly,
it should at least try 30 seconds or so...)

This is how a typical attempt looks like:

$ telnet router 2021
...
ati
Modem product ID = 242

OK
ati3

OK
ATS7=60

AT+FCLASS=2.0

NO CARRIER

- I tried this with 3 known-working fax devices at the receiving end
(ZyXEL 1496/POTS, ZyXEL 2864/ISDN, plain-paper standalone fax machine),
but same effect every time.

Is there any specific trick to it, or is it a case of "this is not
supported, it will not work"?

Hmmm. It *seems* that I'm not accessing the modem properly - a few
seconds after my last attempt, with me still being in telnet (writing
this mail), suddenly I had this in my telnet window:

AT&F&D2S34=18000S40=10S54=456debugthismodemS71=4
OK

... so it seems that "the router wanting to talk to the modem" and
"my telnet connection to line 21" are interfering here.

So what's the recommended way to do

  - "TCP/IP connection to AS5300"
  - "talk AT commands to modem"
  - "send fax"?

thanks for your assistance,

gert
