Some folks at Berkeley/ICSI wrote a paper on the subject:

Check out page 4, first column, last paragraph.

I read through 1771 and couldn't find Dan's specific reference.
In section 6.3 of RFC1771, the group states:

  	The AS_PATH attribute is checked for syntactic correctness.  If the
   	path is syntactically incorrect, then the Error Subcode is set to
   	Malformed AS_PATH.

Syntactic correctness is not specifically defined.
