Thanks.  These are running in hybrid mode, and unfortunately we don't get
any message until the port goes errDisable, which is a little late :-)

Which switches?

Cat6500's will, once some threshold is exceeded, log such errors. e.g. 
from a native mode switch:
Apr 23 07:42:04: %PM_SCP-SP-4-LCP_FW_ABLC: Late collision message from 
module 9,  port:08

Then if you are exporting your logs to a syslog server, have a process 
watch the logfile and email you things you dont expect, and you'll get 
notifications emailed to you.

Otherwise use one of the snmp front ends to rrdtool, and have an alert 
if port errors > 0.
