I totally agree; It makes much more sense to me to have one module of
code dedicated to tracking the in/out bytes on an interface, rather than
to split the code up by interface type and counter need.

I've heard that the IOS 64-bit counters are not true 64 bit,
rather two 32 bit counters thrown together. Can anyone confirm this?
