That is true, my thought was that they would get better heat extraction
close to the fans.

Wouldn't you put the switch rather towards the bottom ss the temperature
of the input airflow would be lower?
We've run 6509s (2xsup II, 2 PSU, 5 modules) in racks with side panels
and never had heat problems.
