Experience from my previous employer suggests that 6500 is fine for
normal IP (including full BGP tables) and L2 together. It is certainly
superior to any 7200 when it comes to DDoS handling capability (because
of hardware forwarding and ACLs).

Note that if you want to use the 6500 for STM-1 you need OSMs, which
are significantly more expensive than regular Ethernet modules.
