For the problem I had (VIP crashing), Cisco also advises to make sure
the boot image has been updated to a version that matches the IOS.
I am going to do that one of these days for my router, since I
suspect that it's a software problem. It seems to happen in bursts,
favoring times when there is a lot of traffic.
In the meantime, the "single line card reload" has at least contained
the damage to only the networks behind the failing card.
Are you getting the log messages off a syslog server? If so, check
the local log buffer to see if there are any other messages that
were not sent out because of the card reset. Also, did you look
for any crashinfo files? I wasn't getting any originally, but did
a squeeze of bootflash a couple of weeks ago and now I see two new
ones sitting there waiting for diagnostics...
