Define hardware based. A normal Cisco PIX (515, 525, 535), as far as I
know, is basically a standard microprocessor (x86 architecture?) which
does all the work in software. Now you can certainly argue that the
software is purpose-built for its firewall tasks - but it is still
software-based.
