Cleanup of catalyst vlans should be performed in the easiest form:
cat#delete flash:vlan.dat
which also cleans out vtp domain and vtp revision, so, now you
can safe plug this switch into any of your vtp-domains.

Agreed. Personally I have not experienced any such problems in the
past years..
