Jim

to "go" from Token Ring to Ethernet, an equipment needs
to "bridge" the frame maintaining the IP Packet intact.

Bridging means:
- strip of L2 headers of incoming L2 protocol (T.Ring)
- keep "copy" L3 info
- put new L2 headers for outgoing L2 protocol (Ethernet)

this is detailed by IEEE 802.1 bridging functions.
These functions may be performed by any BOX that
has >= L2 functionality : i.e. Switch, Bridge, Router,
Gateway, etc..

If a Router has a Token Ring and Ethernet port and
need to forward (Route) an IP Packet between these
interfases, it will perform a bridging (L2) function, because
it (L3) decided that the IP Packet should go from-to these
interfases..

regards,
