On "classic" interfaces, it's a 32 bit counter, so the maximum byte value
is 4294967295.

To my joy, ATM subinterfaces in 12.3(recent) have 64 bit counters now, 
so you can see larger values.

ATM3/0.34 is up, line protocol is up 
  92255570 packets input, 54003587514 bytes
  95772757 packets output, 72845841995 bytes 

(the number above is about 17 "wraparounds" of a 32-bit-counter)
