In certain situations I'd think SNMP queries could be more CPU intensive, 
but you could possibly back the CPU priority on the SNMP agent process 
down using the undocumented command "snmp-server priority low" **

** - I assume no liability for you melting your router down, getting 
divorced, stepping in a puddle or any other negative consequence, as a 
result of using this command.

I think the 'separate feed to a zebra/quagga box' idea is the best 
approach.
