Along these lines,
Can anyone point out some general guidelines to assess GSP memory
happiness, i.e. what is the best way to assess if your getting close to a
low memory situation, how does one decide if adding another BGP peer with
full routes is going to cause trouble, etc...

Yes - ask James ;)
You need to hook up to the console port or onboard GRP
ethernet port as you can't telnet in as there is no routeing.
