[c-nsp] 512M RAM in NPE400 - known problem?

Daniel,
I just went through this about a week ago. Yes, it is a known problem with
Cisco. If you issue a "show c7200" look for the hardware revision in the
CPU section and the revision should be 1.1 (I believe). Just open a TAC
case and they will ship you new NPE-400's free of charge.

Subject: [c-nsp] 512M RAM in NPE400 - known problem?

Hi,

ok, what's the word out there... are there known hardware problems with
512M RAM in NPE400?

I went thru _six_ different 512M modules until I found one that that
boots at all and survives longer than 3 minutes. Most won't boot, one
survived 1-3 minutes, and the sixt one now survived 20 hours with
periodic crashes. I've given up on _that_ NPE400.

We've tested the 5th module (didn't boot in my NPE400) in a different
NPE4 which ran rock-solid on 256M, and it did survive only for about
an hour, then hard locking crash. The 6th module (24hr with several
crashes in my NPE400) now seems to work fine since a few days in the
other NPE400.

It looks to me as if the bus signal drivers have a hard time under the
load of a 512M memory module and it depends on the specific box wether
it'll work or not.

The RAM modules were anything from "something with proper specs" to
"Cisco approved third-party RAM" from a well-known shop. Kingston
unfortunately doesn't manufacture the 512M module for NPE400 anymore.

BTW, the 256M module of the other NPE400 works fine in my NPE400, no
probs since 72 hours yet.

Given that it's not only my specific NPE400 which seems to be HIGHLY
picky about 512M modules I wonder wether other folks have experienced
similar horror trips trying to upgrade...

Best regards,
Daniel
