Some IOS platforms already have it, and BFD is really what you want
here - distributed platforms run the BFD keepalives on the line card,
so even a CPU overload on the main CPU won't lead to a session reset.

AFAIR, BFD is in 12.0(recent)S for GSR and 12.2(18)SXE for 6500/7600
(and not available for other platforms, suprise).
