The 12G has 10 GBIC interfaces and 2 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports, the 12T
has it the other way around, 10 x 10/100/1000 RJ-45 and 2 GBIC ports.

The 3550 is rather old and will be (has been?) replaced by the 3750.
You can still get a 3550, but I think it will go to end of sale in the
next few months, which means it won't be supported much longer (maybe a
couple of years?).

If you're just looking for a L2 gigabit on copper switch, you might
want to consider the 2970 series, which are a much newer design. If you
are looking at the 3550 for it's L3 capabilities or L2 gigabit switching
on fibre, I'd go for the 3750 instead. The 3750 still has a rather
hefty price tag, though.
