Find a criticial security hole in the software version that you use, and 
get a free update (for some of the worst bugs, Cisco is offering free
updates).

Besides that, purchasing a new IOS version is usually cheaper than getting
a SmartNet contract - but if you want regular updates, a maintenance 
contract is your friend...
