Vincent ,

Specifying a numerical next hop on a directly connected interface will
prevent the router from performing ARP or each destination address.
However, if the interface with the next hop goes down and the numerical
next hop is reachable through a recursive route, you should specify both
the next hop IP address and the interface through which the next hop should
be found. For example, ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Serial 3/3 192.168.20.1.

For more Info you can have a look to this link ,

Hope this helps
David

Hello list,

in an Internet access network, with managed CPEs behind PtP links, is there
a reason to prefer one of the three syntax below?

ip route A.B.C.D 255.255.255.X Serial Y/Z:0

or

ip route A.B.C.D 255.255.255.X E.F.G.H

or

ip route A.B.C.D 255.255.255.X Serial Y/Z:0 E.F.G.H

where A.B.C.D is the customer LAN address, and E.F.G.H is the serial IP of
the CPE ?

(If that matters, both LAN and PtP route are inserted in iBGP.)

Vincent
