All very true, but RFC1350 was updated by RFC2348 in 1998 which  
includes the BLOCKSIZE option which allows the client to request a  
larger block size.  You are correct in saying that calling a server  
"broken" if it doesn't support it is a little harsh.  However,  
calling the developers of the server "incredibly slow" and the server  
itself  "way behind the times" probably isn't quite as harsh  ;-)
