Hi,
I am migrating a customer's enterprise MAN/Campus network to a L3 MPLS
VPN solution where I will be managing the MPLS core. I am used to
connect to customer devices via BGP but in this case (a primer for me)
the customer wants to use OSPF.
This connection is equivalent to a PE-CE link used in normal MPLS
offerings
Fast convergence is an issue here that the customer is concerned with
I am using IS-IS as my IGP for this small network and prefer not to
cluster my devices with too many protocols if I can avoid them.
Furthermore BGP is the standard delivery point protocol (OSPF being
widely used as the IGP in the Core) and would be easier when I handover
this network to operations.
Are there any pro's and con's for using OSPF vs BGP?
Customer's valid argument is that OSPF can converge faster than BGP (we
are using redundant connections). How far can I tune down BGP to get
reasonable convergence times for BGP (in a sma? 2 seconds is acceptable
to the customer.
