You will hit the per module limit of 1200 / 1800 using 802.1q trunks long
before you hit the system wide limit. Sup720s running IOS 12.2SX support
the "sh vlan virtual-port" command to view the per-module virtual port counts.
My understanding is that the STP limits in the 12.2SX release notes were
done using Sup2s and older WS-X61xx modules. The Sup720 with new WS-X65xx,
WS-X67xx, and WS-X68xx should be able to do more, but Cisco hasn't published
any numbers.
