[c-nsp] WIDS software

I spent some time looking for an open-source alternative for WIDS, but
no success.
Does anyone know if the session protocols are available to the public?
I'm interested on WIDS, but if no opensource alternative is present,
maybe I could do the job, but reverse engineering is hard and
time-consuming.
Can someone tell if there is documentation at cisco to start this
project? Are the APIs open to the public?
regards
