I know FreeBSD can do VLAN trunking, and I assume NetBSD can do the same.

"More effective" how? It's not too uncommon to use both. VLAN trunks
are simpler and the equipment is less expensive, MPLS has more features
and the equipment costs more (surprise surprise).
