Depending on the server hardware and OS you're running, you may be  
able to do NIC failover on the host which, upon detecting loss of  
link on the active switch and port, will simply activate the same IP  
address (and in some configurations, even the same MAC address) on  
the secondary switch/port.  Solaris supports this, and I believe you  
can do it with other *NIXes as well.  I think Windows supports this  
in some NIC configurations, too (will be NIC-and-server-specific).
