What didn't work?  I can't speak for NetSim, but I recreated your exact
setup with no problems having all the routers in Area 0.

Should there be link failures that isolate the spokes routers from R1,R2,
and R3, you will end up with a discontiguous backbone.  Normally virtual
links would be used to keep the backbone contiguous in such a situation,
but since there are no alternate paths to interconnect the spoke routers in
some fashion in your sample topology, they would provide no value.  You
will simply end up with two or more isolated backbones that allow for
routing amongst the remaining members of each independent backbone.
