Is there a best way to calculate packets per second?

Simple scenario, just do I can understand the math here...

If I've got three interfaces on a router, each of which is moving 1000 
packets per second in and 1000 packets per second out, how do I calculate 
this?

Or is there an IOS command that I've yet to run into that will tell me 
this?

Or am I misunderstanding things entirely, and I'm asking an invalid
question?  ;)
