Thanks bep and everyone for the feedback... I'm up for the challenge ;)

We're going to install a 3640 there in the next couple of weeks that won't
be put into production right away - then I can work on actual config which
will probably make this easier..

Sounds like you can classify the traffic by sources and destinations.  You
may be able to put them in VRFs, use OSPF in each VRF, and then use floating
statics pointing across VRFs for backup.

A little more detail about topology and service location might help lead to
other suggestions as well.
