The npe 300 will work with 12.0S on non vxr , I tried 12.3 and it will give midplane errors on boot up and not work at all.
I never tried 12.1 or 2 . Someone on this list told me that there were some op codes in 12.3 that will not work with npe300 on non vxr, so maybe 12.2 will work.
I had a npe-300 on non vxr with 12.0.22S (also booted 12.0.32S just to see if it worked and it did) that ran for a long time in production without any issues(it did not have anything fancy running on it however).
It is however not supported so use at your own risk.....

As far as the documentation claims, NPE-300 and up won't work in non-VXR
chassis.

I've never tried it, though.
