This would be necessary if you have the PMTUD enabled. Last time I
tried, the PMTUD was disabled by default, hence the MSS used was 536,
if my memory serves me well.

You can check if it is enabled by doing "sh run | inc path-mtu".
Although I'd first configure the "terminal length 3" (or similar tiny
number, YMMV) - this will cause the telnet traffic to come in very
small segments - so then for the starters you should be able to slowly
page through the entire config, and see what is done there and for
what reasons, before doing any rough movements :-)
if the tiny pager trick works, then you could do some further
diagnostics via the logging buffered.
