We need the 3550-48-EMI's for the L3 features they provide (OSPF/BGP) as we push
L3 all the way out to the customer's switch port. We've had nothing but bad
luck with Dell switches, and not much better luck with HP ProCurve as of late
(although the lifetime replacement warranty is nice, we've used it several
times), so we're all Cisco for now. It is frustrating though that they lack
many of the features HP has, such as 10GBE uplinks (HP 2900G vs Cisco 2960G) at
the same price-point. We considered going to the 6500 platform, but already
have a big investment in the 3550's and don't see enough reason to switch since
the 3550's do everything we need them to do for now. We are just wanting some
additional PSU redundancy for them.
