The two platforms basically have the same layout, same backplanes 
(afaik) and so on, so I guess speed should be the same for most 
practical purposes. As mentioned elsewhere it is more a matter of 
features.

I don't quite follow here. Are your switches participating in the 
IGP, and thus acting as routers/layer-3 switches? If not, remember 
that OSPF boundaries are through routers, not between routers like 
IS-IS. So an ABR between area 0 and another area makes little sense 
unless there are other routers in that non backbone area.
