Well, with a dual-1300W PSU in a 6509, it fires up, complains that you
do not have a FAN2, and shuts down again.
If you put in a FAN2, it will power up, complain that this combination
of FAN and PSU is not support, and give you about 5 minutes to do what's
necessary before it shuts down the PSU.
The latter part was a lifesaver for us - we got a Sup720 that was supposed
to run in a 7604, but the IOS was too old for that chassis, so it refused
to boot (crashed) - in the 6509, we could get it to the point where I could
set it to boot from disk0:, and then I could use *that* in the 7604 to
put a useful image onto sup-bootflash:...
