You also want to make sure the switch that router port is 
attached to supports a larger Ethernet MTU. Also, setting 
your MPLS MTU to at least 1526 (depending on whether you 
are doing vanilla MPLS or AToM as well, e.t.c.) would help.

I faced the same issue with a box connected to a 2950 
Catalyst switch (supports only 1500 bytes MTU) with MPLS 
enabled. Granted, I was running 12.3(20) at the time.
