Download GNS3 (or just dynagen/dynamips) for some hands on.
Although there is no direct cisco switch emulation, you can install an
NM-16ESW in a 3600 and get the important features.
If you've ever had a real network....and accidentally created a loop in an
environment without spanningtree....and then watched the network melt and
all the activity lights go solid....spanning-tree becomes much easier to
understand.
