"timeframes" on MDS are always very quick. its typically <7 days lead
time, more commonly its in the range of 3 days.
this is largely driven by requirements of OSMs (Original Storage
Manufacturers).
for "costs" & procurement of MDS equipment, you'll have to talk to
storage partners who aren't the usual Cisco partners you'll see for
other Cisco LAN/WAN equipment. the storage/SAN market is very different
from traditional markets that Cisco sells equipment in to.
if you're after specific SAN contacts in Australia, drop me a line, I
can point you at some contacts in partners depending on what it is that
you're after.
for "SAN Design" (FC), the link to "Advanced SAN design" whitepaper at
<http://www.cisco.com/go/mds> should be a good starting point.
at least, I tend to think so, I think the guy that wrote that paper is a
nice guy. <grin>
If you're after design help on implementing SAN extension between
locations via IP (e.g. FCIP), or via an optical transport, the design
guide at
<http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/ns340/ns394/ns259/ns516/net_design
_guidance0900aecd8023dd9d.pdf> can be considered the definitive source
for information.
exactly what can be deployed by whom largely depends on the storage
vendor & what they have 'qualified' and 'certified'.
cheers,
lincoln.
