Would you be hitting anywhere close to 5,000 (nodes plus links plus 
loopbacks)?  If not, single area seems to be the better bet.

Multi-area becomes almost distance-vector: there's a vector to the 
backbone area, a vector across the backbone area, and a vector to the 
exit point.  Ick.
