Normally at least a Linux client will do this if it thinks that the name
fed into gethostbyname() is unqualified, e.g. doesn't contain a ".". Try
looking for a "search mydomain.com" line in /etc/resolv.conf.

The client shouldn't do it though, not if the name contains dots.
