We use 'active' as then it is using LACP and testing not just that the 
link is up but it is also successfully shifting packets over it; plus 
some other goodies.

Depends what the disruption was, as you are all L2, if it was the VLAN 
instance that was affected then that would be your longer than expected 
outage.  The Etherchannel will only protect you from link failures on 
the Etherchannel, not from what might be happening inside that 
Etherchannel.
