You can see the specific drops with "show platform port-asic stats drop
GiX/Y", which also works when "mls qos" isn't enabled.
I'm not sure how 12.2(44)SE works, but just turning on QoS (or even
worse: using auto-qos) might make things much worse than they are
without. As usual. :-)
