I've never used a 3500, but IIRC, those are layer 2 switches.  The 3550's 
are all layer 3 switches...so the biggest difference would be one is 
capable of IP routing (participating in OSPF, BGP, etc., having layer 3 
ports) while the other is a layer 2 switch.
