+1 for Autonegotiation.

I have had so many problems because someone forced 100/Full, 1000/Full on a
switch and the servers
could
A) Not set duplex AND speed (some could only set one option)
B) Remember what they had been set to after power off
C) Admin remembers to set on the server at all!

The old cisco switches/ routers convinced people to force duplex and speeds
- as 15 years ago - it actually worked better by being forced. Nowerdays
though, the opposite is the case, but no-one seemes to have informed
the management departments yet.
