You could certainly send the keepalive traffic on that OOB network, but many OOB networks don't meet the robustness standards that one might require for operational (keepalive) traffic.

In my environment I'm using a pair of the 1G capable ports as suggested here.  I'm now kicking myself for using GLC-T in a 1G capable port since a 1m twinax cable lists for about 25% what a pair of GLC-Ts cost.
	
Unfortunately, the "do another VRF" part can't work.  AFAIK, it's not possible to create a new VRF on the 5K, nor is it possible to move interfaces out of their pre-assigned VRF.

I went with RFC3927 link-local addresses in an SVI on an L2 Etherchannel consisting of a pair of GLC-Ts.

It hasn't given me any surprises.  TAC reviewed it, told me I should be fine, didn't seem to share my (or the OP's) concern about making the keepalive robust.
