Mea culpa.
 
That did the trick.
 
Other stacks can handle (and upgrade/downgrade each other) minor revision differences and stay running.
Because the X Series uses the E Series images, they can't upgrade/downgrade the Standard/G Series or vice versa.
Takes a little bit of the Wise out of the Stack, I'd expect some sort of change in the monolithic images going forward (especially considering how they've changed the license structure) ... but the worst part about it is the system messages it cranks out.
That's what had my head spinning off in wrong directions.
 
Almost gave Cisco another ~$10k for a license upgrade I don't need.

they need to run the same IOS release - you've got SE on the 3750G and SE2 on the
3750X - upgrade the 3750G devices
