It would work fine (I currently use ISRs in this role), although I have
been seriously considering using MikroTik/Quagga in one of those
dual-core 1U chassis with forward facing ports as a RR.

For RR PC-based I think you should consider OpenBSD BGPd.. monster it is.. 
much-much better than Mikrotik/Quagga..
