kermit?  I've been using kermit since 1991.  Still works as reliably as the 
day I first tried it.

It may not be the prettiest piece of software but it is awesomely 
bullet-proof and awesomely well ported to just about every architecture and 
operating system in the universe.  When the aliens land, I bet we'll find 
out that they use kermit too.
