but a useful compromise could be through the use of an 'aim' module.  not
quite asa-esque performance, but could provide greater flexibility if
gre/dmvpn/etc. is needed.

ASA's have better throughput when encrypting traffic than routers as routers
have to do all the work on CPU where as the ASA's will have dedicated crypto
hardware.

What kind of speeds would you need over the VPN?
