We have no problem pushing as close to 1 Gbps as reasonably possible. An
FTP transfer between two servers connected to same switch:

[19:18:46 prathlev at euler /dev/shm]$ ncftpget ftp://prathlev@einstein.net.rm.dk/testdata .
Password: ***********
testdata: 2.41 GB 112.15 MB/s
[19:19:12 prathlev at euler /dev/shm]$

TCP payload transer speed of 112.15 MB/s should equal around 991 Mbps on
the wire.

I ran the test twice to make sure the file was fully buffered on the
sending server and copied to RAM, to make sure storage weren't the
issue. The servers are currently doing other stuff, though not much
(load ~0.30).

Beware of the relatively shallow buffers, which may not suit all work
loads. Search the archives for more on that.
