Oh, maybe I was thinking of 3A vs. 3B.  Those would play together sort of.
Not sure about 3C.

er, yes, if you mix XL and non-XL, you'll fall back to the lowest common
denominator.

There's really no other deterministic way to deal with mixing hardware with
different FIB sizes.  Unless you want non-deterministic routers
(personally, I don't).
